"Travel is vital, especially in the worst of times. I would say that, though, wouldn’t I, as a journalist who runs toward danger, not away from it? But in both good and difficult times alike, traveling & meeting people with different & opposing ideas is as important as finding the most inviting beaches, visiting the best restaurants, and seeing the sights." -Christian Amanpour

Birthday Thoughts

(Quick! Before she wakes up… :)

Today is my birthday! I'm furiously writing this before the little morning sounds come from the bedroom and the guy fixing the dryer rings the doorbell. (Yes, our dryer is broken! No doubt he'll have a tried and true Franconian dialect, but I've navigated rougher waters).

I haven’t participated much with the world since our little daughter shot into our lives like a firestorm last month, but I guess any parents reading this can understand. (Friends said they sleep all the time?!) My blog and other projects have come to a crashing halt, which I apologize for, but no doubt as I learn the secrets of baby-whispering it will become easier. My back is a taut system of pulleys and levers. Trying to pack for the next year has been a failed physics experiment. Most thoughts go unfinished, and then I think to myself, was that thought even important to begin with?

Yes, it seems that even the smallest of brainstorms is interrupted by the squeaky calls of this tiny person who I’m in charge of, who’s the light of my life.

I want to express gratitude for being able to have a child in a warm, safe hospital here in Germany, to raise her in a house with time and endless love from me and Michael, but also my friends and family who have visited. Thousands of refugees have been pouring into Germany- welcome centers are being set up all around here, which I haven’t been able to visit yet or contribute to. But I've read about babies being born on train platforms in Munich and Vienna and as the weather starts to turn this autumn, they will need warm accommodations and a place to raise them.

Birthdays are times for quiet reflection- an old friend once told me to light a candle and think about the gifts life has given you. It goes without saying the endless gifts I've received, and I hope I can keep paying it forward. But for today, my 37th year, it'sbouncy-balling and watching the U.S. Open! (Aaaand... she's awake :) Love, Samantha
